Personal Fitness and Physical Education IAOverview
Physical Education promotes lifetime sport and recreational activities and provides an opportunity for an in-depth study in specific areas. The student will participate in activities that include health-related fitness activities cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition, team sports, individual or dual sports, and some outdoor activities. It includes the study of physical development concepts and principles of sport and exercise as well as opportunities to develop or refine skills and attitudes that promote lifelong fitness. Assessment includes both written and performance-based skill evaluations. Personal Fitness is required to graduate in the state of GA. Physical Education I- satisfies credit for 2nd PE credit What you will learn In this physical education class, you will have the opportunity to participate and learn about a variety of physical activities. You will learn the rules, etiquette, strategies and skills related to those activities. We will be working on health related physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition). You Can Earn Points in Physical Education Class If You: 1. Arrive on time to class and are sitting on your gym spot (roll call) ready to learn. 2. Participate in all activities the first time you are asked. 3. Display respectful behavior towards teacher and other students. 4. Use appropriate language when speaking with teachers and other students. 5. Wear proper gym clothes. 6. Use the physical education equipment safely and appropriately. You Will Have Consequences and/or Lose Points in Physical Education Class If You: 1. Have an unexcused absence. 2. Are tardy to class without a pass. 3. Show poor effort during the class period or if the teacher has to remind you to get moving or participate. 4. Are disrespectful towards the teacher and/or classmates. 5. Are not dressed in your gym clothes. 6. Make unsafe or inappropriate choices with gym equipment. Attendance/Tardy Policies: Students should be in class daily. Students should not miss health class because they are "helping" other teachers. Students need to be in class when the bell rings. Class will begin at the bell. If the student is late to class, they will adhere to the tardy policy below. Tardy Policy: 1st- 2nd- 3rd- 4th- ABSENCE POLICY: If you are absent from any personal fitness or physical education class, you must write a one page paper on any physical, mental/emotional or social education topic. The paper should be turned in no later than 2 days after your absence. If your paper is not received you will have earned a permanent zero. GRADING: Students can earn up to 20 points for each school day of the 9 weeks. Each week will be comprised of 100 points. The Classroom grades/points will be based on dressing out and participation and cooperation. The summative grades will consist of written tests and assignments. Students are required to dress out daily. If a student chooses not to dress out, 10 points will be deducted from his/her daily grade and the student will have a consequence. If a student decides not to participate in the daily activities they will lose all 20 points. The rest of the student’s grade will come from assignments and assessments. Grading Scale: DRESSING OUT: Students will be expected to wear a t-shirt, shorts or athletic pants, socks, and tennis shoes. The shorts must be fingertip or mid-thigh in length. Students may not wear cut-off shirts or tank tops. Clothing inappropriate for P.E. and school are yoga pants or any other type of tight fitting clothing. Shorts must be worn at the waist. Sweat pants and jackets are permitted during cold weather. Each student is expected to dress out daily unless otherwise specified. Students will not be allowed to wear clothes that have been worn to school for P.E. class-- P.E. outfits can’t be worn to school. Students must change each day. LOCKER ROOM AND LOCKERS: Students will be expected to arrive in the locker room on time. Upon entering the locker room each student must dress out and lock up their belongings. The student must use a combination lock. Please remember...LOCKERS ARE NOT ASSIGNED AND FOR DAY USE ONLY!...after the student leaves PE they must take all of their belongings with them to their next class. NO VALUABLES: Students should not bring any valuables to PE. The PE department will not be responsible for lost or stolen items in the locker room. The student must lock up all of his/her belongings daily. All valuable possessions should be left in the students main locker. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES: cell phones, ipods, and other personal electronic devices are not permitted in the gym, locker rooms or the athletic fields. All electronic devices should be kept in your main locker. You will not be given a warning. If an electronic device is out, you will be written up. TAKING PICTURES IN THE LOCKER ROOM IS AGAINST THE LAW! MEDICAL CONCERNS: If a student is unable to participate for medical reasons, they will need to bring a note from home. All notes should have the parents name, phone number and email address. This will assist me with any questions I might have about the injury or illness. After 3 consecutive days of not participating in P.E., a medical excuse from a doctor is required (County Policy). The student will be given a modified assignment. If your student has any major medical conditions please let me know as soon as possible via email or sending in a personal note. |
